25 more devils headed for mainland
With about 60 Tasmanian devils already residing in mainland zoos and sanctuaries the next shipment of 25 healthy devils headed to the mainland soon, brings the total to 85. This brings the mainland population to a little more than half of the 150 minimum required for a successful breeding program.
Stephen Smith of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD) project says that the population needs to be built up to at least 1,500 individuals and sustained for at least 10, if not 20 years before scientists can consider reintroducing devils back into Tasmania; long enough, they hope, for DFTD to fully disappear from that state.
