Disease spreads to Tasmanian north-west

Nawrantapu National Park, in Tasmania's north west, currently contains a dense population of healthy Tasmanian devils. However biologists announced on Friday that devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) has now been identified in two devils from this population.

DFTD is a fatal condition, killing devils within six months. Over fifty percent of Tasmania's devil population has already succumbed and researchers believe it is likely DFTD will have spread across the entire state by the middle of 2008.

Scientists are recommending urgent action to move healthy devils to offshore islands or isolated enclosures as soon as possible.
