Details of the insurance population project
A detailed article in newspaper The Age describes some of the many strategies being employed to conserve the Tasmanian devil from extinction by devil facial tumour disease (DFTD).
There are plans for at least 1500 and as many as 5000 devils to be entered into the insurance population project which will involve as many as 40 zoos across Australia, Europe and North America.
130 infected devils on the Tasman peninsula in Tasmania have been destroyed in the first effort to erradicate the disease from the wild.
On a positive note, the western population of devils in Tasmania is still disease free.
