Senior researchers speak out on Gunn's issue
Senior research fellow Dr Brendan Wintle and senior lecturer Dr Sarah Bekessy have spoken out about the issues surrounding the proposed Gunn's pulp mill in Tamar Valley, Tasmania.
Having researched the impact of forestry practices on 11 species in north-eastern Tasmania - including mammals, birds, plants and invertebrates, the pair found that all species were affected to at least some degree.
In this opinion piece they strongly urge Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull to disallow the mill without rigorous assessment of its environmental impact.
The article notes that 180 of the 279 public submissions expressed concern over the harvesting wood for supply to the mill. Wintle and Bekessy's research found the spotted-tailed quoll (next largest carnivore after the Tasmanian devil) was "predicted to decline substantially" in response to forest harvesting.
