New devil sanctuary aborted due to threats from community
The Tasmanian devil breeding sanctuary proposed by the Devils In Danger Foundation for development in Collinsvale, 20 minutes from Hobart, has been aborted.
Director Ray Green claims to have received threats from some members of the local community including a threat that his house would be burned down and his wife run off the road. Mr Green is investigating legal options.
One anti-development poster displayed at the local post office reads "Say no to our endangered devils being used as a front for a commercial landgrab of our community space" according to the source article in Tasmania's The Mercury. Mr Green points out that as a non-profit organisation, it would be illegal for him to earn money through the development and insists the proposal was for the purpose of saving the devil.
As noted here on mainlanddevils.com yesterday, Mr Green has developed a new devil breeding technique. It ensures adult devils do not injure each other through fighting and for the past three years every female devil has successfully raised four pouch young - the maximum number - to adulthood.
